News on June 1st, the Armbian community today released the Armbian 23.05 (codename Suni) operating system for ARM and RISC-V single-board computers and other platforms.

Three months after the release of Armbian 23.02, the Armbian 23.05 release is created for the first time on a completely refactored build framework and provides users with some new features based on the upcoming Debian 12 "Bookworm" operating system series. Features and updates from the Debian GNU/Linux community, such as the long-term supported Linux 6.1 LTS kernel series.

This release also brings support for the i3 tiling window manager, which is now Armbian's fourth officially supported graphical environment, by removing unnecessary "Ubuntu Advantage" services and removing the Snap format web browser to update Ubuntu-based desktop images for x86 computers.

Armbian 23.05 version has many other improvements, such as updating the armbian-installer, armbian-config and armbian-firstrun internal build tools to provide a smoother experience when installing and configuring Armbian, cross-platform packages A more streamlined and different underlying package base and consistent desktop selection, as well as the latest security patches.

In terms of hardware, Armbian 23.05 adds support for the latest memory chips on the Banana Pi BPI-M5 single board computer, and rebases the Raspberry Pi, Odroid M1, UEFI and mvebu edge kernels on Linux 6.2. Added support for the NanoPi R6S/R6C open source mini IoT gateway device, rebased the Rockchip 32-bit edge kernel based on Linux 6.3, and enabled support for the FriendlyElec NanoPi R4SE mini router.
