IT House reported on June 11 that IT House learned from Tencent’s official public account that in March this year, Tencent SSV Digital Culture Laboratory, Tencent PCG ARC Lab and Sichuan Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology cooperated to establish a joint team , using Tencent's AI intelligent computing analysis, computer vision and other technologies, and based on professional literature, the first pilot cultural relic simulation splicing work was started. On June 10, under the guidance of cultural relics and archaeological experts from the Sichuan Provincial Institute of Archaeology, the work achieved phased results. The national treasure-level cultural relic "Bronze Statue of a Bronze Beast Carrying a Kneeling Man on a Top" unearthed in Sanxingdui has successfully completed simulation splicing.

This bronze statue is 1.589 meters high and consists of three parts, namely the upper, middle and lower parts. The image is of a bronze beast riding a human. The bronze statue is composed of a kneeling bronze statue unearthed from Pit No. 3 in 2021, a mouth rim of a bronze statue unearthed from Pit No. 2 in 1986, and a bronze mythical beast unearthed from Pit No. 8 in 2022.

This cultural relic was severely damaged, even incomplete, cracked, deformed, corroded, etc. Many of the fragments are still missing, so the repair work is very difficult. Moreover, if you try to put them together, it may cause irreversible damage to the cultural relics.

In March this year, Tencent SSV Digital Culture Laboratory, Tencent PCG ARC Lab, and the Sichuan Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archeology established a joint team to use Tencent's AI intelligent computing analysis, computer vision and other technologies, based on professional literature, The first pilot simulation splicing work of cultural relics has begun.

Under the guidance of cultural relics and archaeological experts from the Sichuan Provincial Institute of Archeology, this "Bronze Statue of a Bronze Beast Carrying a Kneeling Man on a Top" was completed through simulated splicing on June 10. Below is what it looks like in the digital world. You can flip it 360° to see its unique layout and exquisite and complicated decoration. Through color restoration and other technologies, you can feel its glory when it was cast thousands of years ago.

According to Tencent, AI intelligent computing is used to analyze the three-dimensional models of the two cultural relics, extract the geometric feature information of the contact surfaces of the mythical beasts and human figures, and calculate the similarity of their features to determine the matching degree of splicing. We can perform correction algorithms through geometric analysis and detection of deformation cracks, and perform deformation correction surgeries on parts of mythical beasts and human figures. Experts can refer to the symmetry completion algorithm based on shape analysis to guess the original appearance of various cultural relics through "checking for gaps and filling gaps". Finally, using quantitative data and geometric splicing algorithms, multiple fragments can be quickly spliced and compared, and a reasonable splicing solution can be provided. Then analyze the overall force to determine how the two "tall men" can stand firm and not fall flat.

According to Tencent, in addition to simulating splicing work, they also use AI algorithms to assist in analyzing cultural relics diseases. Based on the three-dimensional model, the crack length, cross-sectional data, overall posture and stress conditions of the cultural relics are measured and calculated. This will facilitate experts to have more quantitative supporting data when analyzing the degradation and disease of cultural relics. They will work with a joint project team from the Sichuan Provincial Institute of Archeology to develop AI tools that support archaeological line drawing. Because today's archaeological mapping relies heavily on manual labor, there are tens of thousands of cultural relics in Sanxingdui waiting for cartographers to draw, and there are very few cartographers in the industry, which will seriously affect the release progress of archaeological research reports. Through deep learning, AI can assist in quickly generating archaeological line drawings in various dimensions. It is planned to be applied to unearthed cultural relics in Sanxingdui on a pilot basis, and then gradually open to the entire industry in the future to help improve the efficiency of cultural relic and archaeological research in my country.
