How to check validity of a triangle in Java, when given side length?

As we all know, a triangle is a polygon with 3 sides. It consists of three edges and three vertices. The sum of the three interior angles is 180 degrees.

In a valid triangle, if you add any two sides, it will be greater than the third side. As per our problem statement, we have to check if the triangle is valid if given three sides using Java programming language.

Therefore, we must check whether the following three conditions are met. If satisfied, the triangle is valid, otherwise the triangle is invalid.

Suppose a, b, c are the three sides of the triangle.

a + b > c
b + c > a
c + a > b

Show you some examples

Example 1

If the side is a=8, b=9, c=5

Then by using the above logic,

a+b=8+9=17 which is greater than c i.e. 5
b+c=9+5=14 which is greater than a i.e. 8
c+a=5+8=13 which is greater than b i.e. 9
Copy after login

Thus, the triangle is valid for the given sides.

Example 2

If the side is a=7, b=8, c=4

Then by using the above logic,

a+b=7+8=15 which is greater than c i.e. 4
b+c=8+4=12 which is greater than a i.e. 7
c+a=4+7=11 which is greater than b i.e. 8
Copy after login

Thus, the triangle is valid for the given sides.

Example 3

If the side is a=1, b=4, c=7

Then by using the above logic,

a+b=1+4=5 which is not greater than c i.e. 7
b+c=4+7=11 which is greater than a i.e. 1
c+a=7+1=8 which is greater than b i.e. 4
Copy after login

Thus, the triangle is invalid for the given sides. Fails due to condition a b>c.

algorithm

  • Step 1 - Get the sides of the triangle through initialization or user input.

  • Step 2 - Check if it meets the condition or is not a valid triangle.

  • Step 3 - If satisfied, the printed triangle is valid, otherwise it is invalid.

Multiple methods

We provide solutions in different ways.

  • By using static input values

  • By using user-defined methods

Let’s look at the program and its output one by one.

Method 1: Using user input values

In this method, the side length values of the triangle will be initialized in the program, and then by using the algorithm, we can check whether the triangle given three sides is valid.

Example

public class Main {
   //main method
   public static void main(String args[]) {

      //Declared the side length values of traingle
      double a = 4;
      double b = 6;
      double c = 8;

      //checking if triangle is valid or not by using the logic
      if((a + b > c || a + c > b || b + c > a)){
         System.out.println("Triangle is Valid");
      }  else {
         System.out.println("Triangle is not Valid");
      }
   }
}
Copy after login

Output

Triangle is Valid
Copy after login
Copy after login

Method 3: Use user-defined

In this method, the side length values of the triangle will be initialized in the program. Then the user defined method is called by passing these sides as parameters and using the algorithm inside the method we can check if the triangle given three sides is valid.

Example

import java.util.*;
import java.io.*;

public class Main {
   //main method
   public static void main(String args[]){

      //Declared the side lengths
      double a = 5;
      double b = 9;
      double c = 3;

      //calling a user defined method to check if triangle is valid or not
      checkTraingle(a,b,c);
   }

   //method to check triangle is valid or not
   public static void checkTraingle(double a,double b, double c){

      //checking if triangle is valid or not by using the logic
      if((a + b > c || a + c > b || b + c > a)){
         System.out.println("Triangle is Valid");
      } else {
         System.out.println("Triangle is not Valid");
      }
   }
}
Copy after login

Output

Triangle is Valid
Copy after login
Copy after login

Break or return from Java 8 stream forEach? Break or return from Java 8 stream forEach? Feb 07, 2025 pm 12:09 PM

Java 8 introduces the Stream API, providing a powerful and expressive way to process data collections. However, a common question when using Stream is: How to break or return from a forEach operation? Traditional loops allow for early interruption or return, but Stream's forEach method does not directly support this method. This article will explain the reasons and explore alternative methods for implementing premature termination in Stream processing systems. Further reading: Java Stream API improvements Understand Stream forEach The forEach method is a terminal operation that performs one operation on each element in the Stream. Its design intention is

Java Program to Find the Volume of Capsule Java Program to Find the Volume of Capsule Feb 07, 2025 am 11:37 AM

Capsules are three-dimensional geometric figures, composed of a cylinder and a hemisphere at both ends. The volume of the capsule can be calculated by adding the volume of the cylinder and the volume of the hemisphere at both ends. This tutorial will discuss how to calculate the volume of a given capsule in Java using different methods. Capsule volume formula The formula for capsule volume is as follows: Capsule volume = Cylindrical volume Volume Two hemisphere volume in, r: The radius of the hemisphere. h: The height of the cylinder (excluding the hemisphere). Example 1 enter Radius = 5 units Height = 10 units Output Volume = 1570.8 cubic units explain Calculate volume using formula: Volume = π × r2 × h (4
