iPhone 15 Pro Max features a new telephoto lens that uses a prism design to achieve 5x optical zoom, an improvement over the 14x zoom offered by iPhone 3 Pro and previous-generation iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max models.
5x optical zoom allows for 25x digital zoom, and while that's the maximum zoom offered by an Apple device, it's still lower than the competition.
Samsung’s latest Galaxy S23 Ultra smartphone features 100x Space Zoom, which can capture images from 330 feet away. The Pixel 7 Pro features 30x digital "Super Resolution Zoom" along with its 5x optical zoom lens. Apple never leaned into digital zoom because the quality was poor. Optical zoom uses camera hardware to deliver crisp, clear images, but digital zoom uses software enhancements to crop.
5x optical zoom is a feature unique to iPhone 15 Pro Max and is not available on iPhone 15 Pro. Both phones have other camera improvements, though. The 48-megapixel main camera has a larger sensor to let in more light, and can be set to 24mm, 28mm, and 35mm focal lengths.
There’s also an updated 13mm ultra-wide-angle camera, as well as second-generation sensor-shift optical image stabilization.
