Google pledges to protect users from AI copyright lawsuits, mirrors Microsofts

Google said on October 13 that it would defend users of its generative artificial intelligence systems in Google Cloud and Google Office suites if they are accused of intellectual property infringement. Previously, companies such as Microsoft and Adobe have made similar commitments

Large technology companies such as Google have been investing heavily in generative artificial intelligence and are racing to integrate this new technology into their products. But many well-known authors, illustrators and other copyright owners have said in several lawsuits that using their works to train artificial intelligence systems or using artificial intelligence systems to create related content violates their rights.

A Google spokesperson said, “To our knowledge, Google is the first company in the industry to provide comprehensive protection for artificial intelligence users,” and the protection specifically covers the above two types of claims.

Google said the new policy applies to software systems such as the Vertex AI development platform and Duet AI system that can generate text and images in Google office suites and cloud service programs. But Google's announcement Thursday made no mention of Bard, the company's better-known generative AI chatbot program.

Google also pointed out that if the user intentionally uses the output content of generative artificial intelligence to infringe the rights of others, then this protection policy will not apply

It is reported that a new article on generative artificial intelligence Wave lawsuits typically target companies like Google that own these systems, rather than individual end users.

Defendants generally claim that using data collected from the Internet to train artificial intelligence systems falls within the scope of fair use under U.S. copyright law
