IBM launches 'Arctic', the fastest chip to run AI, with speed and energy efficiency increased by more than 20 times
[CNMO News] On October 23, according to CNMO, the American technology giant IBM released a new brain-inspired chip called "Arctic". According to the official introduction, this chip runs "image recognition algorithms driven by artificial intelligence" 22 times faster than similar commercial chips and 25 times more energy efficient than similar chips. This breakthrough technological achievement has been published in the internationally renowned scientific journal Science.

It is understood that the biggest feature of the "Arctic" chip is its unique computing and storage module design. It interweaves computing modules with modules that store information, allowing each computing core to access remote storage blocks as easily as adjacent storage blocks, greatly speeding up the exchange of information between computing units and storage units. This design idea is inspired by the way the human brain works.
This is not the first time IBM has attempted such a design. Prior to this, IBM had manufactured a chip called "True North" based on a similar design concept. However, the Arctic chip goes a step further, transforming the technology into a digital architecture that is compatible with the silicon technology used in contemporary computers.

Dr. Dharmendra Modha of IBM Research Laboratories said: "This is a new way of looking at computer architecture."
Media analysis said that the release of this "Arctic" chip will undoubtedly have a profound impact on the global field of artificial intelligence computing. Its emergence may lead to a new technological revolution and change the way we process information. At the same time, this will also provide more powerful computing capabilities in fields such as artificial intelligence and big data processing, and promote the development of these fields. However, although the performance of the "Arctic" chip is impressive, it will take time to test its performance in the market.
