News on October 26, according to market research agency Counterpoint Research's latest survey report shows that global smartphone CMOS image sensor (CIS) shipments hit a trough in the first half of 2023, reaching 2 billion units, a year-on-year decrease of 14%. This downward trend is mainly affected by multiple factors such as weak market demand, inventory adjustments and the reduction in the number of smartphone cameras.

Alicia, Research Analyst at Counterpoint Research Kong noted that persistent inflationary pressures and an uncertain macroeconomic environment had a negative impact on consumer confidence, resulting in lower-than-expected smartphone shipments.

At the same time, the average number of cameras per smartphone also declined slightly in the first half of 2023, from 3.9 in the second half of 2022 to 3.8. In terms of rear cameras, the market share of smartphones equipped with dual-camera and triple-camera solutions continues to grow, gradually taking over the market share of mobile phones equipped with four-camera solutions. Especially Chinese Android OEMs have been actively reducing the number of cameras to save costs or free up more space. The convergence of cameras, processing units and algorithms has become central to improving overall camera performance and image quality.

From a supplier perspective, Ethan, associate director at Counterpoint Research Qi said Sony was the only supplier to achieve year-on-year growth in CIS shipments in the first half of 2023, thanks to the strong performance of Apple's iPhone despite the market downturn. At the same time, due to weak sales in the Android market and channel inventory adjustments, the two giants Samsung and OmniVision experienced varying degrees of year-on-year declines.

Although the end market remains weak, smartphone OEMs are expected to gradually replenish inventories starting in the third quarter to prepare for the launch of new models to ease inventory levels. However, this recovery will be relatively modest due to macro headwinds. According to the editor's understanding, global smartphone CIS shipments are expected to reach 4.2 billion units in 2023, a year-on-year decrease of 10%.
