Bilibili official stated that Bilibili began to develop its own BILIAV1 encoder at the end of 2020, and began on-demand business on the PC side in early 2022. Deploying AV1 encoding, is currently actively preparing for the application of AV1 encoding in live broadcast services.

According to reports, the BILIAV1 project started in October 2020. The open source software encoders at that time mainly included the reference code Libaom and Intel's SVT-AV1. Secondary development based on existing open source products can save a lot of R&D time on basic components and is a relatively safe R&D route for encoders. However, research by the B station coding team found that although both Libaom and SVT-AV1 have obvious room for optimization ,But its original architectural design severely restricted the application of many optimization technologies. Therefore, based on the team’s existing technology accumulation, the official decided to develop an AV1 encoder from scratch.

BILIAV1 is currently online for web-side on-demand transfer code. BILIAV1 2.4.0 saves about 15% in average bit rate compared to the open source SVT-AV1 1.7.0 encoder.

Bilibili officially stated that as the iPhone begins to support AV1 hard decryption, it is foreseeable that the deployment of AV1 on the mobile terminal will gradually increase in the next few years, and Bilibili will continue to increase its investment in BILIAV1.
