Arm today announced the launch of the Cortex-M52 core designed specifically for AIoT applications, which improves performance in DSP and machine learning and reduces costs. Arm’s partners are expected to launch related products in 2024
According to reports, Cortex-M52 will promote the popularization of MCU’s ML functions by being superior to the current market price, and bring AI computing power into lower-cost, lower-power devices.
Compared with previous generations of Cortex-M series products based on the Armv8.1-M architecture, Cortex-M52's ML performance can be improved by up to 5.6 times, and DSP performance can be improved by up to 2.7 times.
IT Home Note: Cortex-M52 was previously known as "Star" STAR-MC2 in the Chinese market. It is a product jointly developed by Arm and the R&D engineering team of ARM Technology
Cortex-M52 adopts Arm Helium technology, which can significantly improve the performance of DSP and ML applications in small, low-power embedded devices, and can deploy more computationally intensive ML inference algorithms at the endpoint without the need for a dedicated NPU
Arm said the Cortex-M52 has the lowest area and power consumption among all Cortex-M processors supporting Helium technology, enabling enhanced artificial intelligence capabilities for lower-cost IoT devices
In addition, Cortex-M52 provides a simplified migration path from Cortex-M33 and Cortex-M4 to meet various AIoT application needs, such as automotive and industrial control, predictive maintenance, and wearable sensor fusion
Thanks to this, Cortex-M52 can provide scalable flexibility across a range of performance points and configurations, while providing DSP capabilities without the need for a separate processing unit, thus saving chip area and cost.
Additionally, Cortex-M52 features the latest Armv8.1-M architecture security extensions, including Pointer Authentication and Branch Target Identification (PACBTI) and Arm TrustZone technology
Arm said Cortex-M52 will also help accelerate the rollout of PSA Certified Level 2 certified chips, enabling the next generation of PSA Certified devices.
