It is reported that at 2:18 a.m. Eastern Time on January 8 (12:02 Beijing time on January 8), a mission will be held in Cape Canaveral, Florida. The mission, in addition to the manned spacecraft, will also carry five autonomous microrobots called COLEMNA, which are part of the development of the Laboratory of Special Instruments (LINX) of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). The robots are only 4 inches (10 centimeters) in diameter and weigh 2 ounces (60 grams), but are equipped with wheels, sensors and computers that give them the ability to study the moon's thin atmosphere. This mission will provide scientists with more opportunities to understand the lunar environment and lay the foundation for future exploration missions.
In Spanish, "COLEMNA" means honeycomb. Each robot carries a small solar panel that can be connected together to form a larger solar panel.
The COLEMNA robot will be safely transported to the lunar surface via a micro-catapult, following the successful arrival of the lander. There, the tiny robot will conduct a series of experiments designed to prove its ability to survive in the harsh environment of lunar regolith. The Mexican team says the COLEMNA robot will make it possible for self-organizing robots to analyze planetary surfaces and build structures.
This project is part of Mexico’s participation in the Artemis program. The Artemis program is co-led by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and six other space agencies around the world, and will be officially launched at the end of 2022. In addition to Mexico, countries such as Brazil and South Korea are also involved in this emerging space program.
