According to news on January 7, the latest regulations issued by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for 2024 models have forced Tesla to adjust the cruising range estimates of many of its models.

EPA 新规下,特斯拉车型续航里程普遍下调

According to Electrek, new EPA regulations require automakers to consider all driving modes, not just the most fuel-efficient ones, when calculating range. For example, a car might have Eco mode, Normal mode and Sport mode. Previously, automakers could give range estimates based solely on energy-saving modes. Now, the prediction must take into account both normal and motion modes. The new rule will affect several 2024 models, and Tesla has adjusted the estimated range of some models in its online configurator. Here are the details:
Tesla Model S
Long-range 19-inch wheel package remains unchanged at 405 miles.
Long range 21-inch wheel package increases from 375 miles to 382 miles.
Plaid 19-inch wheel package reduced from 296 to 359 miles.
Plaid 21-inch wheel package reduced from 348 to 320 miles.
Tesla Model X
Long range 20-inch wheel package reduced from 348 miles to 335 miles.
Long range 22-inch wheel package reduced from 330 miles to 322 miles.
Plaid 20-inch wheel package reduced from 333 to 326 miles.
Plaid 22-inch wheel package reduced from 311 to 300 miles.
Tesla Model Y
Rear-wheel drive 19-inch wheel package remains unchanged at 260 miles.
Rear-wheel drive 20-inch wheel package remains unchanged at 242 miles.
Long range 19-inch wheel package reduced from 330 miles to 310 miles.
Long range 20-inch wheel package reduced from 319 miles to 292 miles.
PeRFormance models reduced from 202 miles to 285 miles.
Tesla Model 3
As of press time, the cruising range of all models remains unchanged.
It’s unclear why some models have increased range while others have decreased or stayed the same. However, the wording in the new EPA rule may provide some clues.
EPA says: "This new policy applies to new testing of 2024 and later model years, and can also be used for new testing of 2023 model years. Vehicles using past data will not need to conduct new testing as long as the testing is still valid (i.e., new testing is not required). MPGe/range test), you can continue to use data generated under the old policy. For 2024 and later models, manufacturers adding new configurations to the test group must use the new test results that comply with the policy, but if the existing data has Representative, existing data can still be used.\"
EPA's new regulations will make Tesla's range estimates closer to reality, which not only protects consumer rights, but also helps promote electric vehicles healthy development of the industry.
