Davos Forum: Bill Gates says AI has increased programmer productivity by 50%

At the World Economic Forum in Davos, Bill Gates joined Yahoo Finance’s Julie Hyman and Brian Sozzi to discuss artificial intelligence (AI) innovation and Industry impact. They highlighted the potential of AI in various fields, including healthcare, education and finance. Gates said that AI will promote the advancement of medical technology and improve patient diagnosis and treatment. Hyman and Sozzi talked about the application of AI in the financial field, such as predicting market trends and providing personalized investment advice. Three experts, including Bill Gates, talked about the application of generative artificial intelligence, artificial intelligence governance, and the impact of AI on white-collar workers.

The following is the video transcript:

BRIAN SOZZI: Are you worried about the speed of artificial intelligence’s progress in innovation?

Bill Gates said that there are many ways to make applications cheaper, faster and more accurate, mainly to improve work efficiency. He often uses artificial intelligence to get tips and let it check and simplify things. He found that this approach really resulted in a significant increase in productivity.

For programmers, their productivity is expected to increase by 40% to 50%, which means that programs can be developed faster, improve their quality, and make them better. As a result, we can expect significant gains in white-collar productivity.

JULIE HYMAN: Do you think there is a need for governance around AI globally?

Bill Gates said that artificial intelligence can be applied in various fields, not only to achieve positive goals, but also to conduct challenging things such as cyber attacks and designing bioterrorism weapons.

So far, even though we have some technologies like nuclear weapons that are still very, very scary to this day, we have managed to control them. So there's a lot of discussion about getting people in government to understand AI, is this going to be something so addictive that government officials are going to be sitting there talking to AI and what should the government's guidelines be?

When we have computers, books, and video games, we have to think about what is the right use to get the benefits and minimize the negatives.

JULIE HYMAN: I think social media has had a similar situation in recent years, and it feels like the regulation of social media has not been successful. Social media may also have caused some harm. Do you think AI can learn from this?

Bill Gates: Well, what we see on social media is that people often rally around extreme views and even misinformation. And, I think that's part of what we want to try to avoid.

No one has proposed a set of regulations that can completely solve this problem. Different countries will try different things and I hope we do better in that area. What’s more important with AI is that it makes it easier to generate information, you can get videos and images easily. Therefore, it is necessary to highlight, what are the benefits of social media? What harms to young people can regulation reduce? Can error messages be reduced?
