DC locations will no longer use NetBIOSWINSmailslot-based discovery by default
We have previously announced the deprecation of Windows Internet Name Service (WINS) and remote mailslots. These technologies are outdated and present security risks in the current environment. To accommodate these changes, we have made two improvements to the DC locator algorithm in Windows. First, we fixed an issue where many legacy applications still used short NetBIOS-style domain names when locating domain controllers (DCs). By introducing smarter logic into the DC locator, we are able to more accurately resolve and locate domain controllers, thereby improving system performance and security. Second, we realize that deprecating these older technologies may have an impact on the location of DCs in the environment. To ensure a smooth transition, we are providing tools and resources to help administrators and developers migrate their applications and systems. These resources include documentation, guidance, and technical support to help users understand and respond to these changes. We are committed to providing a safer, more modern environment that meets the needs of our users. By deprecating outdated technology and improving the DC locator algorithm, we are able to ensure the stability and security of the system and provide a better experience for users. We encourage users to migrate and upgrade promptly to take advantage of these improvements and new features.
First of all, we disable the use of DC discovery methods based on NetBIOS/WINS mailslots by default. However, if you need to restore this behavior, you can do so by using a new Group Policy setting (BlockNetBIOSDiscovery). In addition to disabling the BlockNetBIOSDiscovery policy, the EnableMailslots SMB configuration option needs to be enabled to revert to default behavior. (You can use the Get-SmbClientConfiguration and Set-SmbClientConfiguration PowerShell cmdlets to query and set the EnableMailslots configuration.)
Please note: Recovery should only be considered a temporary measure while more feasible, longer-term solutions are explored plan.
