On February 1, CMOS image sensor supplier Smartway released a 50-megapixel image sensor SC5000CS specially designed for mobile phones. This latest research and development achievement will bring higher-quality image shooting capabilities to mobile phone photography.
This new back-illuminated (BSI) sensor adopts a 0.702μm pixel size design and integrates SmartSite’s exclusive SFCPixel-SL technology. Through further optimization of the SFCPixel patented technology architecture, the technology innovatively implements a double conversion gain design within the pixel, thereby significantly improving the dynamic range of the sensor and showing lower noise performance in dark field environments. The sensor size is 1/2.5 inches, which is very suitable for use as the main camera of a smartphone, and supports PDAF phase detection focusing function.
According to my understanding, Smartway has made an important breakthrough in the noise control of SC5000CS. According to official test data, the sensor's read noise (RN) and fixed noise (FPN) dropped to below 1.0e- and 0.2e- respectively, which were reduced by approximately 33% and 43% respectively compared with products of the same specification. In addition, pixel response non-uniformity (PRNU) is also reduced by about 54%, which makes the captured pictures richer and more delicate, with clearer details.
SC5000CS supports a variety of high dynamic range modes, including double-exposure non-overlapping HDR and line-overlapping HDR modes, which can cope with various lighting environments and capture more details. In addition, the sensor also supports four-in-one (summing) mode, with a single pixel size of 1.404μm, providing a smooth 4K 60fps video shooting experience.
Streetway officials stated that SC5000CS has now entered the sample delivery stage and plans to start formal mass production in the second quarter of 2024. The successful development of this sensor will further consolidate SmartSite's leading position in the CMOS image sensor market and bring better image performance to smartphone cameras. This is great news for smartphone users, who will be able to capture higher-quality, clearer photos and videos. SmartSite has been committed to technological innovation and product upgrades to meet users' increasing needs for image quality.
