Your kid loves Wreckfest and wants to play this demolition derby style racing game on iPad. However, every time you try to download, you get a message that your device is out of space. Don’t worry, we have some simple solutions to beat your opponents in no time.

How to free up storage space on iPad

Check your iPad storage

If you receive the "Storage is almost full" warning on your iPad, go to Settings > General > "[Device] Storage". There, you can see the remaining space and what's taking up the majority of it.

Delete Unused Apps

Once you understand your storage space and what's taking up the most space, you can start making some tough decisions. Maybe you haven't opened that language learning app in a while, and we recommend deleting other apps you no longer use. This frees up more storage space and makes your device more efficient.

Use cloud services to store videos and photos

If you don’t want to permanently delete your photos and videos, try backing them up on a cloud storage service such as iCloud.

Before you get started, review our cloud guide and make sure it's right for you. If so, double-check that you're connected to Wi-Fi and that you have your Apple ID and password handy. Then follow these steps:

Tap Settings, then tap your name. Click iCloud. Click "iCloud Backup". Turn on iCloud backup.

Your tablet will now automatically back up when connected to power and Wi-Fi. For a one-time manual backup, follow steps 1-3 above, then click Back Up Now.

After you finish backing up your device, go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Photos , then tap Optimize iPad Storage. When this setting is enabled, your original photos will be scaled down to a smaller resolution, taking up less space.

Remember, your iCloud is already synced to your device. If you back it up and then go on a photo deletion spree, you'll end up deleting your photos forever.

If you plan to move your photos to the cloud and then delete them from your iPad, you'll need to cancel the sync. Here's how: Go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Photos , then click Sync this iPad to turn it off.

Save photos and videos to a physical hard drive

Not in the cloud? We get it. Try saving the photo to your computer or external hard drive.

Depending on your iPad, you'll use a Lightning cable or a USB-C cable to connect your iPad to your computer or external hard drive. Once connected, you may be asked to trust the new device.

Open the Photos app. Click Select and select all the photos you want to save. Click Share > Save to file. Open the Files application. Click on your computer or external hard drive and select Save.

Make the Most of Your Music Storage

You probably don’t think about your “Route 66 Playlist” when you’re not on the road, but we bet those thousands of songs take up some space . Here's how to organize your music:

Open the Apple Music® app. Click Downloaded. Find the song, album, or music video you want to delete. Press and hold the item and click Delete. Click "Delete Download" to delete just that item from your iPad. Or click "Remove from Library" to remove the item from all devices.

Got some songs you don’t listen to often but don’t want to delete? Go to Settings > Music > Optimize Storage. This feature will not delete your songs, but you will have to be connected to the Internet to listen to them again.

Check your iMessage settings

The easiest way to clean up a lot of storage space in iMessage is to delete conversations. Especially those with large attachments such as videos or photos.

Delete Large Attachments in iMessage

Here's how the largest attached files appear in iMessage.

Open settings. Click General. Click iPhone Storage. If prompted, click View large attachment or View downloaded video. If not, tap Messages. Click on a photo, video or file. Click Edit and delete any large files you no longer need.

Set iMessage Storage Limit

If you're not careful, your chain of iMessages that you've been using for years can take up a lot of storage space. Here's how to set up iMessage automatic limits:

Open Settings. Click Message. Click Keep messages and update how long your device keeps messages. You can change it to 30 days or 1 year. We recommend a maximum storage time of 30 days.

Clear your web browser cache

Your internet browser remembers what makes surfing the web easy for you. This might help, but it also takes up space on your iPad.

Here's how to clear the cache in Safari: On iPad: Go to Settings >Safari, then click Clear History & Website Data.
