Volkswagen adjusts electric car production plan, ID.3 withdraws from Wolfsburg factory
According to German media Handelsblatt, the Volkswagen Group recently announced adjustments to its electric vehicle production plans. The electric model ID.3 originally planned to be produced at the Wolfsburg plant will be cancelled, and the Zwickau plant will continue to assume this task. This decision was due to the fact that market demand for the ID.3 did not reach expected levels.
As the largest automobile factory in Germany and even the world, the Wolfsburg factory has been famous for its huge scale and high production capacity since its establishment in 1938. However, with the rise and changes in the electric vehicle market, the Volkswagen Group has had to make a series of adaptive adjustments.
According to the editor’s understanding, Volkswagen production director Christian Vollmer said: "In the final analysis, every euro that 'we don't necessarily need to spend' is important." Therefore, Volkswagen decided to temporarily only produce fuel vehicles and plug-in hybrid vehicles at the Wolfsburg plant, such as Golf, Tiguan and other models. Vollmer emphasized that these popular models will ensure full utilization of the factory.
Although Volkswagen has canceled plans to produce the ID.3 at its Wolfsburg plant, they will continue to work on electrification. Vollmer added that even if there is no ID.3 production task, the factory will still actively promote the electrification process.
In July 2023, German consumers discovered that the price of ID.3 in China was much lower than in Germany. At that time, the starting price of this model in Germany was 39,990 euros, while the price in China started at less than 16,000 euros. Regarding this price difference, a Volkswagen spokeswoman explained that this is mainly due to the combination of production cost advantages, lower energy costs and supply chain optimization in the Chinese market. In addition, facing the fierce "price war" from competitors such as Tesla and BYD, Volkswagen has to adopt corresponding market strategies to maintain competitiveness.

DoNews reported on April 1 that Reuters reported that SAIC Motor plans to lay off thousands of employees in 2024 at its joint ventures with General Motors and Volkswagen and at one of its electric vehicle subsidiaries. Reuters reported on April 1, citing two people familiar with the matter, that the Chinese state-owned automaker was seeking to cut 30% of its workforce at SAIC General Motors, 10% at SAIC Volkswagen, and more than half of its workforce at subsidiary Feifan Automobile. People familiar with the matter said that the layoffs will not be carried out on a large scale at one time and are planned to be completed within 2024. The company will lay off most of its workforce by setting tougher performance standards and offering severance packages to employees who resign due to low performance. A spokesman for SAIC Motor said the Reuters report that the company would lay off employees was "untrue" and said the company would not provide compensation for laid off employees.
