Alumni of Tsinghua University, Zhejiang University and Fudan University are on the list, and Chinese account for half of the 2024 Apple PhD Scholarships

Among the 21 Apple scholars selected this year, Chinese doctoral students are still the main force.

Just now, Apple Machine Learning Research (Apple Machine Learning Research) officially announced the 2024 AI (artificial intelligence), ML ( List of "Apple Scholars" who have received doctoral scholarships in the field of machine learning.

A total of 21 young scholars received funding from the Apple Scholars Program this year, half of whom are Chinese.

The Apple PhD Scholarship is designed to reward and support promising doctoral students in the field of computer science and engineering to conduct research, and is awarded annually. Winners will not only receive scholarship support, but also internship opportunities at Apple and academic guidance from Apple researchers.

#Jie He

Jie He is a doctoral student at the University of Edinburgh, and his supervisor is Professor Jeff Pan. Jie He works to develop more reliable and accurate generative models, specifically by diagnosing and evaluating model weaknesses to make targeted improvements. His recent work includes commonsense reasoning and retrieval-augmented language models.

Jiang Yao

##Jiang Yao is a third-year doctoral student at the Data Science Center of New York University , the supervisors are Professor Eric Oermann and Professor Kyunghyun Cho. Yao Jiang’s research focuses on the secure and efficient integration of large language models (LLMs) in healthcare, exploring their practicality, privacy implications, and computational efficiency.

Bowen Jin

##Bowen Jin is from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Doctoral student, supervisor is Professor Han Jiawei. Previously, he was an undergraduate student majoring in electrical engineering at Tsinghua University. Bowen Jin's research is at the intersection of large-scale language models, information networks, and text/data mining, specifically how language models integrate text, network, and multimodal data to solve real-world problems, including information retrieval and knowledge discovery.

Daogao Liu

##Daogao Liu is a doctoral student at the University of Washington, and his supervisor is Yin Professor Tat Lee. Previously, he received a bachelor's degree in mathematics and physics from Tsinghua University in 2020. Daogao Liu's research interests lie in the fields of theoretical computer science and machine learning. Daogao Liu focuses on designing algorithms and solving (convex) optimization problems while satisfying differential privacy constraints.

Yecheng (Jason) Ma

Yecheng (Jason) Ma is from the University of Pennsylvania A fourth-year doctoral student, the supervisors are Professor Dinesh Jayaraman and Professor Osbert Bastani. Yecheng (Jason) Ma's research focuses on training and deploying foundational models for robots, specifically working to enable robots to learn from Internet-scale multimodal data.

Pi Renjie

Pi Renjie is a third-year doctoral student at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and his supervisors are Professor Zhang Tong and Professor Zhou Xiaofang. Pi Renjie focuses on data-centric artificial intelligence methods, including methods to improve data quality, reduce data redundancy and automatically generate training data. Currently, Pi Renjie is researching the intersection of large language models, multimodal learning, and data generation.

Xia Mengzhou (Mengzhou Xia)

Xia Mengzhou is currently a fourth-year student in the Department of Computer Science at Princeton University A first-year doctoral student, the supervisor is Professor Chen Danqi. Before that, she graduated from CMU with a master's degree, under the supervision of Professor Graham Neubig, and graduated from Fudan University with a bachelor's degree. Her research interests include natural language processing and machine learning.

Xie Yiming (Yiming Xie)

Xie Yiming is a third-year computer science major at Northeastern University in the United States. A first-year doctoral student, the supervisor is Professor Huaizu Jiang. Prior to that, he received a bachelor's degree from Zhejiang University in 2019, studying under Professor Zhou Xiaowei. His research focuses on 3D computer vision, specifically 3D reconstruction, perception and generation. His research goal is to develop an intelligent system that can perform unified 3D perception and generation for augmented reality (AR).

Jiayuan Ye

##Jiayuan Ye is a doctoral student and supervisor at the National University of Singapore For Professor Reza Shokri. Prior to that, she received a bachelor's degree from the University of Science and Technology of China. Jiayuan Ye's research direction is data and privacy protection in machine learning. Additionally, she is a 2023 Google PhD Fellowship recipient.

Jieyu Zhang

##Jieyu Zhang is currently a fourth-year PhD student in computer science at the University of Washington student, studying under professors Ranjay Krishna and Alex Ratner. Prior to that, he was an undergraduate student in computer science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. In the past, he has done research at Microsoft Research and ByteDance Artificial Intelligence Lab.

Jieyu Zhang’s research focuses on the field of data-centric artificial intelligence/machine learning. His research goal is to develop efficient and effective methods to create high-quality training data collection and comprehensive assessment benchmarks.

Zhuohao (Jerry) Zhang

##Zhuohao (Jerry) Zhang is currently a junior at the University of Washington A first-year doctoral student, the supervisor is Professor Jacob O. Wobbrock. Prior to this, Zhang Zhuohao received a master's degree in computer science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a bachelor's degree in computer science from Zhejiang University. His research focuses on leveraging human-computer interaction to address real-world accessibility. Additionally, he has a special interest in designing and evaluating intelligent assistive technologies.
