Bloomberg: Apples scrapped second-hand iPhones are sold in large quantities to China

IT House reported that Bloomberg recently published a column revealing the dispute between Apple and mobile phone recycler GEEP. Apple has partnered with GEEP to pay GEEP to dispose of 250,000 devices per year. In the first two years of the contract, Apple sent more than 530,000 iPhones, 25,000 iPads and 19,000 Apple Watches to GEEP.

However, during the recycling process, GEEP found that many products that were required to be scrapped could still be used normally, so GEEP simply cleaned them up, shipped 100,000 iPhones to China, and then sold them on second-hand platforms to make profits. During the audit process, Apple discovered that GEEP claimed to have scrapped but actually smuggled at least 99,975 iPhones, so it sued the company.

Apple subsequently gave up the lawsuit. Bloomberg reported that this was Apple’s attempt to avoid going to court and publicly admitting to scrapping fully usable devices, which is in sharp contrast to the company’s environmental stance.
