Create a simple APT warehouse Quickly build a simple APT warehouse
As part of my job, the PATHspider I maintain relies on some functionality in cURL and PycURL that has just been merged or is still waiting to be merged. I need to build a Docker container that contains these Debian packages, so I need to quickly build an APT repository.
The Debian repository can essentially be regarded as a static website, and the content is GPG signed, so it does not necessarily need to be hosted in a trusted place (unless availability is critical to your program of). I host my blog on Netlify (a static website host) which I think would be a good fit for this situation. They also support open source projects.
You can install netlify’s CLI tool using the following command:
sudo apt install npm sudo npm install -g netlify-cli
The basic steps to set up a warehouse are:
mkdir repository cp /path/to/*.deb repository/ cd repository apt-ftparchive packages . > Packages apt-ftparchive release . > Release gpg --clearsign -o InRelease Release netlify deploy
After you complete these steps and create a new website on Netlify, you can also manage the website through the web interface. Some things you might want to do is set up a custom domain name for your repository, or enable HTTPS using Let's Encrypt. (If you plan to enable HTTPS, make sure you have apt-transport-https in the command.)
To add this repository to your apt sources:
gpg --export -a YOURKEYID | sudo apt-key add - echo "deb https://SUBDOMAIN.netlify.com/ /" | sudo tee -a /etc/apt/sources.list sudo apt update
You will find that these packages can be installed. Pay attention to APT pinnng, as you may find that the newer version on the repository is not actually the preferred version depending on your strategy.
Update: If you want a more suitable solution for daily use, please refer to repropro. If you want end users to add your apt repository to their systems as a third-party repository, check out this page on the Debian wiki, which contains instructions on how to use your repository.
Update 2: A commenter pointed out using aptly, which provides more functionality and removes some of the limitations of repropro. I've never used aptly so can't comment on the specifics, but from the website it sounds like it's a great tool.
