What does open source code mean?

Open source code refers to software source code that can be publicly viewed, used, modified, and distributed. The license of open source software allows anyone to view, use, modify and redistribute the source code of the software, and usually requires that these modified and distributed codes must also be open source. Some famous open source software projects include the Linux operating system, Apache web server, MySQL database, PHP programming language, etc.
