Void Shard farming is a grueling task unless you know what you’re doing. Let me explain how to get all Void Shards in The First Descendant, including Elements, amounts, and all locations. I’ll also explain how the system works and the Descendants you’ll need to make farming a breeze.
Void Fragments are easy to find as they are labeled on each area map. The icons come in a few colors that indicate the required Element. For example, the Reactor in the image above is red for Fire.
The Elements are displayed with the following colors:
You need the appropriate Descendant to destroy Void Fragments. For example, if you have Bunny or Ultimate Bunny, you can destroy specifically Electric Void Fragments.
If you’re unsure of what type of Void Fragment you’re interacting with, bring up your map and hover over the Fragment. The card that comes up should say what kind of skills can be used on the shard. It’ll be above the Main Rewards section.
As soon as you hit the Void Fragment with the right Descendant, a health bar will appear. There should be two gauges with two different colors. One white, and the other, red. Taking down the Void Fragment is done in two parts.
The first section is after you bring down the white bar. Upon taking out the shield, enemies will spawn around you. Take care of them, then go back to attacking the fragment. When the red gauge is depleted, you’ll trigger another wave of stronger enemies. Just like before, defeat them all and head back to the fragment to finish the event.
When the Void Fragment is destroyed, you can collect all the rewards associated with it. Again, you can check the card to see what you’ll get out of it.
Destroying the fragments gives you Void Shards that can be placed in Void Fusion Reactors to activate them. To complete these missions, you must deposit a certain amount of shards.
Each mission has different quotas for how much they need. To find that out, interact with Void Fusion Reactor, and the card will highlight what type of shard it needs. Knowing what kind of Void Shards and Fragments you need gets easier once you start unlocking all the Descendants in The First Descendant.
Each Reactor opens a specific Amorphous Material, which is labeled on the map card or if you visit it on the map. If you have the required Amorphous Material, you can open it after activating the Reactor and defeating the enemies that spawn.
You can use whichever Descendants you have available but require one Electric, Toxic, and Fire user. At the time of writing, Freyna is the only Toxic Descendant, making her mandatory for Toxic Void Fragments.
Bunny is an easy pick for Electric Fragments. You’re practically given Bunny during the Campaign, and she’s a steller Farming Descendant thanks to her speed and mob-clearing potential. If you detest Bunny for some reason, Sharen is a good backup, and she’s the best Descendant in the game for Infiltrations.
Blair is easy to farm and is a solid pick for a Fire Descendant. I know these characters take time and luck to obtain, but trust me, they are worth it in the long run.
The best part of the Season 1 overhaul is Non-Attribute Descendants are now worth using. There are plenty of Non-Attribute Void Reactors scattered across the map. During Season Zero, these Reactors gave such a low amount of Void Shards they were utterly useless. Now, they give the same values as Elemental Reactors.
The most obnoxious part of Void Shard farming is navigating the clunky menus to find what you need. With this in mind, I’ve put a chart together that shows the location of every Void Fragment. I’ve also listed the rewards and Descendant Element required to open them.
These values are for hard-mode farming, as you earn so much more per run. I strongly recommend completing the campaign before grinding, as progression is painfully slow otherwise.
During the Season 1 Overhaul, the Void Shard system has been greatly simplified. The procedure for gathering them is the same, but you get far more than before. Reactors now only require one type of shard, whereas they needed two during Season Zero.
Thanks to the Season 1 changes, the Non-Attribute locations are just as viable as their Elemental counterparts. The new values also mean you usually only have to run a Void Shard once to obtain enough materials to use a Reactor.
You can also get Void Shards from Special Operations missions. The values for these activities have seen dramatic buffs for Season 1. These missions are great for breaking the monotony of Fragments runs, and they are a decent place to level up and earn Gold and Kuiper.
Reactor farming is a drag, but the Amorphous Materials they open can contain valuable Ultimate Descendant pieces. The grind isn’t for the faint-hearted, but the rewards are the best characters in the entire game.
