How to mark articles as read or unread

As the administrator of the platform, I have published an announcement. How can I realize read or unread reminders for different people? Just use the database to do it? If the amount of data is large and there are many members, will the pressure on the database be too great? I hope Daniel can provide a good design idea, thank you!
