Solana has just announced its latest smartphone, the “Seeker,” which comes at half the price of its predecessor, the Saga.
Solana has unveiled its latest smartphone, the “Seeker,” priced significantly lower than its predecessor, the Saga. Available for pre-order at $450 to $500, the Seeker boasts new features and aims to move beyond being known solely as the “memecoin phone.”
After facing criticism for its technical limitations upon launch last year, the Saga's sales soared in December 2022 thanks to a 1,000% surge in the memecoin Bonk (BONK), leading to a sell-out. Solana is now aiming to capitalize on that success with the Seeker.
Speaking at TOKEN2049 in Singapore, Emmett Hollyer, General Manager at Solana Labs, highlighted the Seeker as a “rewards magnet” during a conversation with TechCrunch. However, he emphasized that the device's appeal will extend beyond memecoins.
"Seeker, just like Saga, will be a rewards magnet, but also, it’s a huge opportunity for teams to build totally new experiences,” Hollyer said.
Promising a range of use cases, from memecoins to DeFi, payments, and gaming, the new device will feature an upgraded dApp store and improved hardware. Hollyer also mentioned that the Seeker will boast a higher-quality screen, better cameras, and a longer-lasting battery to address past concerns.
“It’s lighter, brighter and better,” Hollyer said, regarding the hardware improvements. He also clarified that Solana isn't aiming to compete directly with mobile giants like Apple and Samsung but rather to maximize crypto utility in a handheld format.
One key aspect of the Seeker is its open DApp store, which will enable developers to launch and deploy new applications more easily, bypassing the restrictive policies of Apple and Google. Hollyer specifically mentioned that token launchpads, which typically face challenges due to the 30% fees imposed by traditional app stores, will find a welcoming platform on the Seeker.
